ONLINE FORMS

Be sure to fill these out as soon as possible! If you have any questions, contact us at (212) 674-4300 or email: [email protected].

Before You Arrive

Filmmaking

Filmmaking students should prepare by writing any story ideas, character notes, or other thoughts to bring with them to camp. These ideas will inevitably develop once the program begins, but it will be a great help to have some concepts prior to starting the program. Remember to think visually!

Filmmaking students should begin thinking of music they might want to use and bring music files with them to the camp.

While there is no required reading, we have found the following books to be excellent resources: “Film Directing: Shot by Shot” by Stephen Katz, “The Art of Dramatic Writing” by Lajos Egri, “The Filmmakers Handbook” by Edward Pincus and Steven Asher, “Making Movies” by Sidney Lumet and for screenwriting, Lew Hunter’s “Screenwriting 434.”

Acting for Film

Acting for FIlm Students can prepare by watching your favorite actors and notice what it is about them that you admire and makes them good.

Take note of specific scenes and performances that move you. Read a variety of plays and film scripts and if there is a particular one you’d like to perform, bring it with you. Your instructors may be able to integrate it into your class.

For books on acting and technique, check out: “Respect for Acting” or “A Challenge for the Actor” both by Uta Hagen, “On Acting” by Sanford Meisner, or A “Dream of Passion” by Lee Strasberg.

Living in Paris

HOUSING

Citadines Montmartre Paris
16 Avenue Rachel
75018 Paris, France

The residence is situated in the 18th arrondissement (district) in the heart of Montmartre, which is an easy walk to our classrooms at La Fémis (The French national Film School and former PathéStudios). Rooms are fully furnished shared studios (double occupancy) with a private bathroom, television, and wifi. The residence management has been operating housing facilities for international students for many years, and they are very helpful and student-friendly.

PRICES

Housing prices offered through the New York Film Academy include a daily continental breakfast (but do not include lunch and dinner) are as follows:

1-Week Double Room: $1,365.00
3-Week Double Room: $4,095.00

PLEASE NOTE:
In addition to the housing fee, there is a room and key deposit of $250 that is required on a credit card.

YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THE DEPOSIT, AND THE AMOUNT WILL BE REFUNDED IF THERE IS NO DAMAGE DONE TO THE ROOM AND ALL KEYS AND ACCESS CARDS ARE RETURNED. REFUNDS WILL BE PROCESSED AT THE END OF SUMMER.

SUPERVISION

All teen students spending their summer at the New York Film Academy are supervised closely. Counselors live in the same residence as the students and are always reachable. Organized activities and outings are also supervised.

Since the program’s inception, we have allowed students to patronize local eateries and have limited freedom to explore the area. “Buddies” (two or more students) sign out together with one of the counselors, travel outside together, and sign back in as a group. Curfew times are strictly enforced. Students with cell phones are asked to have their phones charged and on at all times.

We enforce a strict no-alcohol policy (see the Parent/Camper Handbook in the online forms for more details).

If there are any questions regarding supervision, please feel free to contact us.

THINGS TO BRING

If you bring computers, appliances or electronics, you will need adaptors for the European type outlet.

Make sure your computer or appliance can be used with the 220 volt European wall current, otherwise it may be damaged.

Again, we encourage you to bring music for your films you may want to use as well as an English/French dictionary.

DINING

A complimentary continental breakfast served daily is included in the price of housing. For lunch and dinner, we recommend students budget $30-40/day.

You can choose from an infinite number of local cafes, bistros and restaurants. Excellent and affordable groceries abound in the neighborhood, so you may keep and cook food in your apartment suite.

MONEY & BUDGETING

No two people have the same financial needs. Costs vary greatly depending on what kind and how much food you eat, how many films and concerts you attend, and how much you like to shop.

CURRENCY

The current exchange rate as of this writing is 1 EUR = 1.04 USD. Students who have personal bank accounts at home will find ATM’s plentiful and will receive a good exchange rate.

Credit cards are also a good option for purchases and cash advances through one of many Visa or American Express cash machines or offices. If you will be using credit or debit cards, call your bank(s) and inform them of the dates you will be in Europe; otherwise, when foreign transactions appear, they may think your card has been stolen and temporarily lock usage on it.

It is a good idea to bring some foreign currency with you (100-200 euros) for taxi and initial expenses. Students may cash traveler’s checks or change currency at most banks abroad. Traveler’s checks are a good option for reserve funds. Personal checks will NOT be accepted.

PERSONAL SAFETY GUIDELINES

Paris is one of the most exciting and vibrant cities in the world. All of our past workshops have gone smoothly with no safety problems whatsoever.

At all times students should exercise the same caution appropriate to any new environment: do not walk around alone, do not openly wear expensive jewelry, do not display cash in public, and beware of pickpockets.

Avoid the flea market at Porte de Clignancourt and the Parisian banlieue (suburbs) north of Paris.

Ask our staff if you are unsure of the safety of any area.

TRANSPORTATION

The residence is within walking distance from our school building. As you explore Paris, you will find that everything is easily reached in a short time by the metro.

Subway lines are defined by their first and last stop. The number 13 line crosses Paris, north to south, from “Saint-Denis Universite/Les Courtilles” to “Chatillon Montrouge.”

If you get on at the stop near the residence Citadines Montmartre Paris, look on the metro map to find out whether the stop you want to go to is in the direction of “Saint-Denis Universite/Les Courtilles” to “Chatillon Montrouge” then follow the sign for that terminal stop. (Got it? Don’t worry, it’s easy, and we’ll help you with it!)

PHONE

Each camp counselor will have an international cell phone at all times, so that families may always call to get in touch. We will provide the phone numbers at registration.

If you will be bringing a cell phone, we recommend contacting your service provider regarding your coverage. Our staff will be available to help students obtain a SIM card, if needed.

Filming in Paris

Paris is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and the backdrops for shooting films are second to none.

Students in the teens camps must shoot in Paris, and we will have specific locations designated for you in addition to other locations in Paris of your choosing. Your shoots will always be supervised by an experienced teaching assistant.

Rules & Regulations

For a detailed list of rules, please review the forms online. The rules exist to make sure that everyone is safe and things run smoothly. NYFA reserves the right to present additional rules and regulations at registration. These rules will be reviewed at orientation on your first night of the program.

ATTENDANCE

Classes and weekend excursions are mandatory for students staying in NYFA housing, and attendance will be taken.

CURFEW

Students are required to be in their rooms by 10:30 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 11:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. At curfew, counselors will check every room. Lights out one hour later.

ROOMS

You are not allowed to have anyone in your room who is not a part of NYFA unless it is a family member.

DRUGS & ALCOHOL-ZERO TOLERANCE POLICY

NYFA has a strict ZERO TOLERANCE policy of drugs and alcohol!

Students found with drugs or alcohol in their possession will be immediately expelled from the program at their and/or their parents’ expense.

This includes finding drugs or alcohol in a student’s room, even if they are not being consumed at the time of discovery. It also includes procuring drugs or alcohol for someone else, even if you personally did not partake in their consumption. There will be no exceptions. Expelled students will not receive a refund of any kind (tuition or housing).

Final Screenings

Final screenings will be scheduled on the last Friday of your program and will include the awarding of certificates. Screening times will be announced, but will begin at approximately 3 p.m. Family and friends are invited to attend. All students will receive a copy of their work.

Departures

After the final screenings, students will have time to say farewells, buy some gifts for people at home, and pack. Students must check out and leave the residence on Saturday to travel home.

Please make sure that a counselor has checked you out of your room and that you have returned your key and pass.

BY PLANE

Students returning by air should schedule flights in the afternoon on the last Saturday of their program. Our staff will provide airport transportation for teens traveling on their own. Please be sure the departure flight information is provided to us in the Arrival & Departure form online.
